Ted Lasso season 3: Release date, trailer and latest news

Sudeikis and others involved with the hit Apple TV+ series have previously been reluctant to confirm whether season 3 will be the final one, leading fans to debate about whether season 3 could set up future seasons or spin-offs.

However, in a recent interview with Deadline, Sudeikis seemingly confirmed that the show will end with the upcoming season.

“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell," he said.

"The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet – that being season 3 – it’s flattering.

"Maybe by 31st May, once all 12 episodes of the season [have been released], they’re like, ‘Man, you know what, we get it, we’re fine. We don’t need any more, we got it.’ But until that time comes, I will appreciate the curiosity beyond what we’ve come up with so far.”

Addressing speculation around potential spin-offs, Sudeikis added: “Yeah, I think that we’ve set the table for all sorts of folks... to get to watch the further telling of these stories.

“Again, I can’t help but take the question as flattery for what all of us that were working on the show has tried to do. It’s really kind of folks to even consider that because you never know what’s gonna happen when you make things. The fact that people want more, even if it’s a different avenue is lovely.”

Goldstein, who plays lovable grump Roy Kent in the Apple TV+ series, previously told the Sunday Times they're writing season 3 as if it were the comedy's last.

"We are writing it like that," he said. "It was planned as three. Spoiler alert: everyone dies."

While these comments don't bode particularly well for those who would like the Jason Sudeikis-led show to continue, Sudeikis himself previously gave fans some hope during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“The story that’s being told – that three-season arc – is the one that I see, know, and understood,” he said. “As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know.”

Ted Lasso season 3 release date

Ted Lasso season 3 will premiere on Wednesday 15th March 2023.

The series will release episodes weekly and the season consists of 12 episodes.

The news was confirmed by Apple TV+ on Tuesday 14th February 2023.

Despite the chaos caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the team behind Ted Lasso were able to get a second season ready for release less than a year after the first, although there has been an additional complicating factor this time around.

Contract renegotiations between Warner Bros and the Ted Lasso cast reportedly delayed the show's writing team from starting work on season 3 scripts by approximately one month.

Fortunately, new agreements were settled and the project is once again moving forward, but this minor setback could mean Ted Lasso season 3 doesn't find its way to our screens until late summer 2022.

Fans can rest assured that their Richmond FC favourites will be back for Ted Lasso season 3, including co-creator Jason Sudeikis in the title role as the ever-optimistic football coach.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the former SNL star has earned a significant pay rise for season 3, standing to make in the region of $1 million per episode moving forward. Back of the net!

He isn't the only one getting a boost, as several members of the supporting cast will also be getting higher wages next season off the back of the show's commercial and Emmys success.

Hannah Waddingham is confirmed to be reprising her role as Richmond FC owner Rebecca Welton, while Juno Temple will also be back as her best friend and branding whizz Keeley Jones.

Meanwhile, Brett Goldstein will be returning as gruff footballer-turned-coach Roy Kent, after recently debunking a conspiracy theory that he is an entirely computer generated creation. Seriously.

You can also expect more from Brendan Hunt as the wise yet troubled Coach Beard, who also serves as a writer on the show as well as its co-creator.

We will also see returns for Toheeb Jimoh (Sam), Phil Dunster (Jamie), Nick Mohammed (Nate), and Kola Bokinni (Isaac), as it's hard to imagine Richmond FC without them.

Previously, editors AJ Catoline and Melissa McCoy recently teased big character arcs for Rebecca and Nate in the upcoming season.

"[Nate's] on a trajectory, career wise... From season 1 as kitman, then he became a coach and now he's the coach of West Ham," Catoline said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "Jason is so very generous as a producer and creator. He gives all of the characters a storyline. I think that's why [the episodes] are so full… There so many storylines; he wants every character to have an arc."

Speaking to Deadline about what fans can expect to see of Rebecca, actress Hannah Waddingham teased: "When we see Rebecca again, she's a boss-ass bitch. She's 100 percent boss-ass bitch and then some. She’s fully there because she wants to be and there’s a change in her that I think was much needed. She's leading that group of players and wants the best for them."

She continued: "As far as her personal life is concerned, it's delicious chaos as usual. That's life, right? You never have everything sorted."

We could also see more cameos from British television personalities, with season 2 featuring appearances from Gary Lineker, Jeff Stelling, Chris Kamara and Thierry Henry, as well as This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

Ted Lasso season 3 plot

The plot synopsis from Apple TV+ for the season teases: "The newly-promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the ‘wonder kid', has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United.

"In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard (Brendan Hunt).

"Meanwhile, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency.

"Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway."

Is Ted Lasso ending after season 3?

Possibly! Ted Lasso star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis has been quite open about the fact that his initial pitch for the series was a three-season story arc, meaning it could naturally wind down next year.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: "It's by no means me typing every key stroke and saying every word. It's nowhere near like that. But the story that’s being told – that three-season arc – is one that I see, know and understood. I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know."

Goldstein (Roy Kent), who is also in the writers' room, revealed in June that they were writing the third season as if it were the show's last, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Ted Lasso co-star Toheeb Jimoh (aka Richmond FC star player Sam Obisanya), said he would be happy with whatever the writers decide to do.

"I think it definitely comes down to the creative team," Jimoh said. "If Jason [Sudeikis] and Bill [Lawrence] feel like there's mileage and there's anything else that they want to address then I think maybe we'll do more.

"But, there's also something really nice about not overstaying your welcome, and just having something that's very impactful and very short and sweet."
